St Wilfrid
St Wilfrid brought the gospel to Sussex after Christian practice had died out following the collapse of the Roman Empire and the invasion by Anglo Saxon peoples from Northern Europe in the 5 th and 6 th Centuries.

St Cuthman
Cuthman was a layman who was born is 681 at the time of St Wilfrid’s mission in Chidham, a small village on the coast to the west of Chichester. He may have been baptized as an infant by St Wilfrid himself.
St Richard
Richard was elected bishop of Chichester in 1244 but King Henry III opposed his appointment and he was kept out of the cathedral for two years. He moved between the 200 churches in his diocese, staying mainly with Fr Simon at Tarring, west of Worthing.
