We aim to make the beautiful ancient pilgrimage pathways of Sussex accessible to everyone, wherever you are. We hope this website, complete with free-to-access routes, information and resources, will provide a starting point to guide you to discover pilgrimage in Sussex.

Maria Whitehouse
Revd Roger Hagon
The Sussex Pilgrimage project is co-ordinated by Maria Whitehouse and the Revd Roger Hagon. Maria has lived in Sussex for over 20 years. She is a dedicated Catholic who is inspired by the lives of the saints, and is motivated by her passion to make their example visible to all. Roger is a retired Anglican Priest who has known and loved the Chichester area since childhood and now lives here.
A keen pilgrimage enthusiast, Maria has successfully led pilgrimage groups on routes across Sussex, and also to further afield sites of historic Christian pilgrimage. These have included Walsingham in Norfolk, St Cuthberts Way to Holy Island in Northumberland, the Camino to Santiago de Compostela in Spain, Ramsgate (St Augustine) and Oxford (St John Henry Newman).
Roger has made personal pilgrimages to Northern Spain and Rome ‘in the footsteps of St. Ignatius of Loyola’ and produced DVDs about Ignatian Spirituality.
Maria and Roger have collaborated for the past few years, devising pilgrimage routes across Sussex to places where the great Sussex Saints – Wilfrid, Cuthman and Richard – prayed and worked to build up the Kingdom of God. They have also led pilgrimages and compiled “armchair” pilgrimages which can be accessed anywhere, anytime using IT.
We now aim to create a wider group of people interested in local pilgrimages who want to work together to participate in regular pilgrimages and make local holy places more widely known.You will be very welcome!
